We appreciate your feedback!

As regular dishers know, we send a survey to every customer following their In-Store, Dish-n-Dash or DishDelivery session.  You may not realize that we get over 1000 completed surveys each month… and we read every single one!  Your feedback has been essential in helping us develop some of our new services and programs, including:

And you bring up questions that make us think:  Should crying babies be permitted at sessions?  Could you have splitters’ utensils at the stations instead of just “fulls”?  How much more would it cost to provide all (or some) organic ingredients?  [Feel free to post a comment on these — or other — issues below].

But we have to admit, our favorite part of reading comments is seeing how important our service is in making your busy lives a little easier, healthier or simply more pleasant.  Just look at a few of the actual, unedited comments that came in this week:

  • “I’m so glad a friend took me to ‘Let’s Dish!’ As a working mother with two small children this has made our evenings less stressful and more enjoyable. My husband likes the meals and I like that everything’s already done. I wish I would have known about this when I was pregnant!” - Amanda
  • “I’ve only been in twice and both times have been phenomenal!  I told the staff that my dishing experience was quickly becoming the highlight of my month.  The food is fabulous and requires so little thought on my part - which is wonderful when entertaining - and every time I go, I am greeted with such a friendly staff and a fun experience.      Let’s Dish is the greatest invention ever!!!” - Savannah
  • “I am a total convert- love how this simplies my life at dinner time every day and frees me up to spend more time with my kids! ” - Chari

So please keep the feedback coming.  What we’re doing well, we’ll strive to do more of.  And where we drop the ball, we appreciate your letting us know!

Bring your kids with you to dish this summer!

Kids like cooking? Take ‘em dishing!School’s out, now what?

That’s the question on many parents’ lips this time of year. Camp, the pool, vacations, etc., are all fantastic ways to spend your summer. But what about those times when the kids are out of camp and tired of the pool or god forbid it’s raining? Why not bring your child with you to Let’s Dish!?

Dishing is a great way for kids to learn about the things they eat and feel more involved in dinner time. It may also help those picky eaters to try new things. They can pick out dinners from our monthly menu and then help to make and cook them! Dishing can also be a fun bonding experience for the both of you.

This summer, we’re adding more “Parent/Kid Sessions” (specially marked as such) to our calendar for you to choose from. Kids 8 years of age and older are encouraged to come to these sessions and dish with a parent. We ask that you help ensure that your child is well behaved and mature enough to handle basic food safety procedures (hand washing, etc) while in the session. Children must be accompanied by a parent at the food stations while dishing. If you have any specific questions about brining your child to dish, contact your nearest Let’s Dish! store.

This summer, when that inevitable question of “what else is there to do?” comes up, you’ll be ready!

Let’s stop calling our kids “picky” eaters.

A couple of weeks ago, I had the honor of being a guest in Mrs. Carlivati’s 5th and 6th grade science classes at Nysmith School in Virginia. Mrs. Carlivati, an amazing teacher, does a unit on nutrition with her classes. In celebration of AHA’s Go Red for Women campaign, I was invited to lead a discussion about heart healthy food choices. My goal was to teach the kids that healthy foods can be yummy too. I was hoping to teach them to try new foods and to start making good choices today.

The formerly “picky” eaters in Nysmith School’s 5th and 6th grade science classThe children were so much fun.

Think “reduce, reuse, and recycle” and be a role model for your kids.

Rachel Rosenthal shared a great idea that really got me thinking. At first glance, it’s a simple system for reducing clutter. But it makes me think of more– things like the value of recycling and even the challenge of teaching our kids discipline and delayed gratification. Before I complicate things and wax a bit philosophical, here’s her terrific idea:

Whenever I buy something new, I always imagine it as a replacement for something that I already have and I get rid of the older item. For example, each time a new issue of a magazine arrives, I toss an older issue into the recycling.

Put your children’s plates and cups where they can reach them.

If you’ve got kids, you’ve got plates, bowls, cups and silverware for kids. You’ll most often find these items emblazoned with a cartoon character on the top or side, smiling at you as you load Beauty and the Beast into the dishwasher.  (And, why is that they seem to endure forever when my Villeroy & Boch bowls get chipped all the time!)

Kids’ tableware is often the most frequently used item in a family kitchen. In my house, a favorite cup is frequently washed, used, and washed again in a single day.  It’s enough to drive a parent to eat on that durn car-shaped plate herself!  (I’m talking in this post mainly to parents of the younger child variety, but the same applies for older kids and stadium cups and similar kitchen delights!)

Here’s Mora Babineau’s tip on how to shift some of that responsibility to the kids:

Move children’s plastic cups and plates to an area that can be easily accessed by them such as a low cabinet or drawer.

We Recommend: How Parenting Style Affects Weight in Children

Every parent thinks about it (or tries not to):  Will what I say and do as a parent help my children become healthy and happy adults?

We caught this Today Show ”Parenting & Family” segment (January 16, 2008) on how parenting style may affect weight in children and think it is worth sharing:

TV/Video IconParents: Are you making your kids fat?
Dr. Gail Saltz (Today Contributor) and
Lisa Drayer (Health Magazine)

The video/article posits that that “permissive” parenting (”My child/parent is my best friend” mentality) is correlated with childhood obesity.  And, Saltz suggests that you are more likely to raise healthy children if you set limits at the same time you affirm your love and encourage them to learn to make good choices.

Easier said than done, I’m sure, especially when you are juggling home, family and work responsibilities all in a single on-the-spot-moment of parenting.  I tend to agree with Saltz though I wish they would invent a magical “groan blocking” adult implant to make it all a little easier.

One thing that comes to mind as this relates to Let’s Dish! and dinnertime is the modern phenomenon of feeding your children a different dinner than you prepare for yourself (and your partner).  In my mind, this does lower expectations for your children.  We all know the “one bite” rule.  Some parents (including me) take it even farther to say “This is your dinner.

A place for everything and everything a place.

Since you may have a little momentum after Alexa’s post on celebrating progress, we thought you might like a little bonus today:

OK, if you’ve been to my house (and y’all are welcome… we’re having Firecracker Chicken this Thursday), you know I’m not doing great on the resolution below. But I am inspired by it.

In fact, I realized that some of our kids’ stuff doesn’t even have a place in the house. For example, we have more shoes than we have room for shoes. So we gave away some that we never use (or outgrew) and built simple compartments by the front door to hold the rest.
