First, say hello to Holly Wildberger - or Holly “Dub” as we like to call her - the food team Development Coordinator for the Let’s Dish! stores in the Mid-Atlantic. Holly W is the woman behind many of the recipes you enjoy on our monthly menu and a key ingredient in the testing process for all our tasty Let’s Dish! meals. We are fortunate that beginning next week, she will lend her expertise to Food for Thought, as she takes us on a tour of cuisines around the world.

Though it has little to do with her role at Let’s Dish!, Holly W does have a passion outside of work: dogs - and gourmet little snacks for them! And, who says that all inspiration in the kitchen is just for you - or just for humans for that matter? With today’s “goodies for your dog” blog, Holly launches our Just for Fun category and brings a little culinary adventure to the four-legged friends in your family!

Medes, Holly W’s dog, pleads for some of those favorite treats!
If you’re anything like me, you do not consider your dog just a dog. He’s part of your family.

There are times that I feel a little guilty cooking up lots of yummy meals in the kitchen while he watches and waits for the second that he is called upon to sample that just never comes. I do not allow him to have “people food” beyond the occasional baby carrot. So I finally found a way to combine my love of cooking and my love of my dog, Medes … bake him a batch of his favorite treats!

These treats bake up in no time and are a fun way to get the kids involved in the kitchen and taking care of the “other” family member. Even if you don’t have a four-legged companion in your home, bake these up together as a family project and donate them to your local animal shelter. They will certainly appreciate them!

Just for FunMede’s Favorite Treats
Reminder: This is a recipe for dog treats, NOT a snack for the kids!!!

Preheat oven to 350°.

  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 ½ cups milk
  • 1 ¼ cups peanut butter
  • 1 TBSP honey or molasses

Combine flour, oats and baking powder in a large bowl. Mix the milk, peanut butter and honey (or molasses) until smooth either by hand or with an electric mixer. Add dry ingredients and mix until it just comes together to start forming a dough. Remove from bowl and knead dough with hands. Dough will be stiff. Roll out dough to 1/4″ thickness and cut into shapes. (When pressed for time, I just press the mixture into a sprayed cookie sheet pan, and prick all over with a fork, then cut into squares.) Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly browned. Turn off oven and leave in oven until cool. Store in an airtight container or in fridge.

Chef’s Tip: On special occasions, I will melt yogurt chips in the microwave and dip the ends of the cookies, then let them dry on wax paper until they are set.

Enjoy … well, actually, I’m not sure that applies here - but I hope your pup gobbles them down!
