When Alexa and I went on WBAL for Sunday Brunch, one of the topics we discussed was fruit vs. fruit juice. In today’s post, Lisa follows up on the issue with some quick guidance on the difference in healthfulness between fruit and fruit juice:
Lisa, does fruit juice count as one of your dialy servings of fruit?
And, is drinking fruit juice just as hearth healthy as eating fruit?
Fruit juice is only a serving of fruit IF it is 100% fruit juice.
So, be sure to read the label to make sure the juice is 100% fruit juice, not a fruit “cocktail” or juice “drink” as some of those only contain as little as 2% fruit juice.
While 100% fruit juice is a serving as fruit, unlike whole fruit, it does NOT contain fiber. Fiber aids in heart and digestive health so make sure you eat whole fruits in addition to drinking them.
And, of course, both 100% fruit juice and whole fruit are one of the healthiest treats you can enjoy. Skip the soda and processed desserts and choose fruit every time; your heart and health will benefit.

Great tip, Lisa! One of my tips would be to make whole fruit an activity AND a food! Each fall, we go apple picking (my father-in-law’s tradition) and it really educates the girls on how apples grow into a delicious fruit. Plus, the fun makes them more likely to eat the applies - that day, for the next month or two while we work down our supply from the bushels we picked, and all year because they’ve developed a love for apples!
Around here, you can go strawberry, rasberry, blackberry, apple, peach, cherry picking and more! And, don’t forget vegetables and whole grains - there are lots of farms where you can pick corn, peppers, beans, etc. - plus you can pick up delicious whole grain breads and other natural foods like honey. YUM!
You can go to http://pickyourown.org/ to find a farm near you - happy picking!
